Children with ASD have a unique way of seeing the world, and their unique vision and sensory experience determines how they feel about holidays. Some ASD kids think nothing about the spooky hauntings of Halloween, and dismiss the decorations without acknowledgement. Others may not be able to be in line of sight of anything black and orange for the next month. While having trick-or-treaters visit your house can be a thrill for many kids, it may be a trauma to others. |

http://xrl.in/8r2b ScienceDaily — With the help of two sets of brothers with autism, Johns Hopkins scientists have identified a gene associated with autism that appears to be linked very specifically to the severity of social interaction deficits. The gene, GRIP1 (glutamate receptor interacting protein 1), is a blueprint for a traffic-directing protein at synapses -- those specialized contact points between brain cells across which chemical signals flow. |

Social integration is significat in any child's development. The problem is that children with autism, Asperger's and NOS/PDD tend to lack the social skills necessary to "fit in". Many times, typical children shun those with differences. So, until your child develops these skills and become successful independently, why not network with friends, coworkers and relatives who have typical children and ask for their assistance. Coach the child on what your child likes and why they act a bit differently. Compassion and kindness are great skills to teach any child.
